Chapter Eleven

Lyra

It was lonely in Dubai without Luke.

I waited for the rest of the afternoon. I was nervous to no end. The hours ticked away until seven o’clock. I can’t remember much of what I did. I stayed in my room, pacing the floors, or checking my phone to see if he’d texted me. I thought about trying to talk to Drake, and explain what was happening between us, but I knew I couldn’t. It would spell trouble. I can’t betray Luke’s trust in me.

A few years ago, I dated a guy named Chris. He seemed like a great person, down-to-earth, and friendly. It was nothing special, but we had something. We saw each other most of the time, and our friends thought it was getting pretty serious. I thought it was getting serious. I thought of marrying him if things hadn’t started to go wrong in communication.

It all started with him flaking out on me. He would tell me he was going to hang with his guy friends. That was fine by me, and at the time I was so busy. I was grateful for the time alone. But then it started to happen more and more often, until eventually, we only saw each other on the weekends. I started to ask his friends if they were ever with him. As it turns out, Chris’s friends didn’t know where he was spending his time, either. Trust was gone. One Sunday afternoon he came over. He acted as though nothing happened. He played the model boyfriend with flowers and chocolate. I asked him to leave. How could I love someone if I couldn’t trust them? To this day I still don’t know if he was cheating. But if I were to bet money on it, I would say he was. It was too late. I couldn’t trust him. Plain and simple.

I was feeling that same uncomfortable feeling. It reminded me of that experience. Waiting for seven o’clock to come around, as the shadows of the city grew longer outside my hotel window. Now, it was growing dark. I showered and changed my clothes. I went down to the lobby and saw Stevens in the car, alone.

“Where is he?” I asked, curious as I got in.

“Mr. Briggs says it’s a surprise, ma’am. But it won’t take us long to get there.”

We pulled out of the hotel and made our way to our destination. I was curious about the fact that we didn’t seem to be going downtown or north, out of the city. We were headed towards the sea. I could see the shimmering waves, bathed orange in the dusk light. As we rounded a corner onto a private jetty with ten or twelve enormous luxury yachts moored to it, I saw Luke. He was standing in short sleeves and a pair of grey jeans with deck shoes, talking with someone on the dock.

We pulled up and I stepped out of the car, transfixed by the beauty of the white sailboats. The sound of gulls flew overhead and my nose filled with the salty aroma of the sea.
